I bought a copy of HR&B's software last year. They restrict their activations to 5 filed returns, rather than 5 software updates / external drives added / removed / etc.
Intuit really needs to get their head out of their six on this. 🙃
Intuit used to do the limited number of filed returns approach.
The "computer with the exact same configuration" fix has stopped working.
I opened TT today, using the same configuration as I had when I last updated it (actually a new code, as Intuit gave me a new one when I used up my allocation at the beginning of the month).
TT updated. Didn't ask for the code. Yes! The exact same configuration seems to work!
Closed TT after entering some data.
Opened it again later - same configuration, same day. No updates needed. BUT IT WANTED MY LICENSE CODE AGAIN!
Why can't intuit get this fixed? It was a problem a few years ago, then stopped, but is now back with a vengeance on steroids.
I did the experiment -
Earlier today updated TT. Did not need code
Later today, re-opened. Needed code. No change in configuration although it is possible that backup software mounted and/or unmounted drives
ejected all drives (but still connected) - tried starting needs code
Physically disconnected all drives neighbors guest wifi used activation code (2 used so far)
Reconnected external drives
Wanted activation code
Physically disconnected all drives
Didn't want activation code
Reconnected external drives with TT still open. This really is an atrocious piece of software, using methods that have not been used for over 10 years.
I just downloaded H+R Blocks software
To add to the mystery, I unthinkingly replaced an internal 500GB SSD with a 1TB and TurboTax didn't complain.
Thank you for taking the time to provide this valuable feedback. I will be escalating these matters for our teams to research this to obtain a resolution.
Thanks - evaluation of your rivals software - it doesn't hold a candle to TT, so I'm not too enthusiastic about using it.
I've now used 7 activation codes in this years tax season, 5 with the first copy I bought and now 2 with the replacement that Intuit supplied when I complained.
Krochat's experience is indeed unexpected!

New update today - required a new activation. I tried several times, wouldn't take. Went through all of the steps described at https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-topics/help/turbotax-2019-requests-license-activation-at-every...; still doesn't work. Uninstalled, reinstalled from scratch; still won't activate.
@HeatherPLO - what happened? I'm now ready to get my taxes done, your software doesn't work. Help!!
We apologize for the inconvenience, however, we are still looking into this issue. If you could please provide screenshots (please remove any personal information) of what you are experiencing that would be helpful as well.
This is what I get.
Went to the FAQ, did everything there and more.
Thank you for providing the screenshot of what you are experiencing. This will be helpful to our team researching the issue.
My pleasure.
Just to be clear - I had the program loaded and activated before the update and had already started my return. No problem getting it to work just fine before.
Thank you! You have gave some great information on this!
Why is this string marked "solved"?? It isn't.
I was on the phone with two different representatives yesterday, neither could help.
I now have all of the documents I need to get my taxes done (and get a hefty return since I just retired). Only thing missing is an operative TurboTax program. Given that the IRS is going to be swamped, the later I submit the *much* later I'll get my money. This is causing real economic harm.
Please try the solution posted within this thread. If you still need assistance, please reach out again.
