Dependent daughter studying medicine in different state

Pl. clarify the following.

  • Me and my wife living and working in Arizona file joint for 2022
  • My daughter is studying medicine in Missouri after finishing 4 year undergrad
  • My daughter has no income and we supported her tuition and expenses

For our return (Fed, and AZ) turbo tax determined her as a dependent.

However my question is

  1. Can my daughter file her state return for Arizona as if she is with us though she is a full time student in Missouri
  2. OR does she have to file Missouri state only
  3. And when a person doesn't even have income at all, do they even have to file even Federal return

If your daughter has no income, she does not need to file a federal or state return. If your daughter is eligible for the Lifetime Learning Credit, you would claim that since she is your dependent.

Please see this from the IRS for federal filing requirements. There is no requirement to file for your daughter.

And there would be no requirement to file for Arizona or Missouri without any income.
