Were you paid by your family as an employee or as a self-employed individual?
An employee will receive a W-2 and report income reported on the W-2.
A self-employed individual may receive an IRS form 1099-NEC and will report self-employment income on Schedule C.
You may report self-employed income on TurboTax Online, but you will have to upgrade to the Premium version of TurboTax Online. Follow these steps:
- Down the left side of the screen, click Federal.
- Down the left side of the screen, click Wages & Income.
- You may need to click Add more income.
- Scroll down to Self-employment click on the dropdown menu.
- Click Start/Revisit to the right of Self-employment income and expenses.
