I listed my country of employment on Form 2555 as Nigeria with dates Jan 1 to Dec 31 2022. I was penalized late fees. Is my due date not the October deadline?

I filed by the October deadline believing this was my due date as someone who doesn’t live in the US. I had taxes owed and was then penalized from April till October. I have done the same precious years with no penalty. Was I penalized wrongly?

See this IRS tax topic for what you must do to avoid a tax penalty and interest on extending the filing of your tax return: https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc304

No.  If you are overseas, you gain an automatic 2 month extension.  However, if you e-file after the April 15 deadline, your return will be considered late.  To get the automatic 2 month extension without filing an application for a regular extension, you must file your return before June 15 by mail and attach a written explanation.  If you want a longer extension, you must apply for the regular extension electronically before April 15.  To apply for an extension after April 15 and before June 15, you must file the extension application by mail and attach a written explanation.

You may be able to ask for a first-time waiver if you didn't understand the rules.
