Hi,
About half a month ago I e-filed my father's return as if he cannot be claimed as dependent on someone else return. The IRS already accepted it, and his return had 0 balance (no refund & no payment due). How can I change the filing in order to claim him as a dependent in my taxes?
Thank you for your help
Nick
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
You will have to amend his return. In the mean time, you will have to paper file because there is no way to e-file if he has already filed claiming himself.
If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been submitted, you should follow these guidelines.
Select your product below and follow the instructions.
Generally, if you e-Filed 1040, you can e-File 1040-X.
However, there is an issue if you are trying to change dependent status using paper.
First step, try it and see if it is ACCEPTED
Note: standard deduction will change, this might change his tax.

Thanks for the very concise explanation CatinaT1
🙂
In our case, the return I want to amend was already accepted by the IRS, and it had no taxes due to pay nor to be refunded. Can it be considered "completely processed"?
I'm not sure if the return that can't be e-filed is the amended one, or the one for the person claiming the dependent?
TIA
Nick
